The Vanguard Award Selection Committee is proud to announce that Caroline Gibson, a senior from Plant High School, has been selected as the December Student Athlete of the Month. Vanguard Attorneys, a Florida personal injury law firm, created the award program to honor the hard-work, drive and discipline necessary for student athletes to have a positive impact in athletics, academics and the community. Members of the committee will present Caroline with the award as well as a $1,000 check for the school’s athletic department during a special assembly for students that will include the Vanguard Award Presentation and a Safety Presentation put on by the Tampa Police Department. The assembly will take place on Wednesday, January 23rdth at 8:30 am at Plant High School located at 2415 South Himes Avenue Tampa, FL 33629

The firm is thrilled to celebrate Caroline’s achievements with local police officers, the student body, teachers and administrators. Following the Vanguard Award presentation, the Tampa Police Department plans to speak about the importance of safety and making responsible decisions during the upcoming Gasparilla Pirate Fest.

Caroline’s College and Career Counselor, Erin Grady, explains that Caroline is a mature and responsible young lady who handles everything with a positive attitude. Caroline battled Leukemia as a young child and now volunteers at the Children’s Cancer Center to support others battling the disease. She is also a member of Plant High School’s Cross Country and Track teams and has won various accolades for her achievements. In 2009, her Cross Country team was recognized for having the highest GPA in Hillsborough County. Caroline has maintained excellent grades throughout high school and plans to attend a four year university after graduation.

Each month of the school year, The Vanguard Award Selection Committee recognizes the “Student Athlete of the Month.” The winning student receives an award recognizing his/her achievements as well as a $1,000 check that is donated to their school’s athletic department in honor of their outstanding performance. Student Athletes of the Month are also eligible to be named the overall “Student Athlete MVP” at the end of the year and receive a check that is applied towards their college tuition.

The Vanguard Award also recognizes outstanding coaches. At the end of each school year, two coaches – one male and one female coach –are recognized for their remarkable contributions, both on and off the field. Each Coach of the Year is presented with $1,000 as a way of thanking them for their commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
