Another motorist was killed in a wrong-way crash on I-275 early on Friday,
February 21st. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Chase Kaleb Leveille,
age 25, was driving a red Honda Civic sedan north in the center lane of
southbound I-275 close to Bearss Avenue right around 2:35 a.m.
An Enterprise rental truck was travelling southbound in the center lane
of I-275 at the same time. Investigators said the two vehicles collided
head-on just north of Bearss Avenue. Both of the vehicles skidded for
about 500 feet before coming to rest in the inside emergency and travel
lanes of the interstate.
Leveille was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. According to investigators,
they had not yet determined exactly why Leveille wound up going the wrong
way on the highway. The two occupants riding inside the rental truck sustained
only minor injuries. All lanes of I-275 were closed until 5:30 a.m. that
morning, when the northbound lanes were re-opened. The southbound lanes
were re-opened at 6:30 a.m.
This incident marks the third deadly wrong-way interstate traffic crash
in less than a 30-day period. Two separate wrong-way fatalities have been
reported since early January this year. Authorities are still investigating
each of these accidents in an attempt to determine why these drivers were
going the wrong way and whether alcohol played a role in any of the fatal
auto accidents. More details are expected over the next several weeks
as forensic results are confirmed in each case.
