The Vanguard Award Selection Committee is proud to announce that Jose Pupo, a senior from Hillsborough High School, has been selected as the November Student Athlete of the Month. Vanguard Attorneys, a Florida personal injury law firm, created the award program to honor the hard-work, drive and discipline necessary for student athletes to have a positive impact in athletics, academics and the community. Members of the committee will present Jose with the award as well as a $1,000 check to be donated to the school’s athletic department during his lunch period on Friday, December 14th at 12:45 pm at Leto High School located at 4409 West Sligh Avenue Tampa, FL 33614.
Jose’s nominating coach, JJ Pizzio, explains that his leadership abilities and determination to succeed embody what it means to be a Vanguard Student Athlete of the Month. This outstanding student athlete is highly respected among students, teachers and administrators at Leto High School. Originally from Cuba, he came to this country without knowing how to speak English and with little knowledge and experience with American culture. However, Jose rose above these challenges and has become a source of inspiration to his peers. A member of the baseball team, Jose has led his teammates not only as team captain and pitcher, but through his motivated spirit and positive attitude as well. Pupo gives back to the community as a tutor and through the local little league program. After high school, Jose plans to attend a four year university in pursuit of his dream to become a veterinarian.
The mission of the Vanguard Award is to celebrate the outstanding achievements of local student athletes. These students provide a strong example for fellow peers and positively impact the school system as a whole.
Each month of the school year, The Vanguard Award Selection Committee recognizes the “Student Athlete of the Month.” The winning student receives an award recognizing his/her achievements as well as a $1,000 check that is donated to their school’s athletic department in honor of their outstanding performance. Student Athletes of the Month are also eligible to be named the overall “Student Athlete MVP” at the end of the year and receive a check that is applied towards their college tuition.
The Vanguard Award also recognizes outstanding coaches. At the end of each school year, two coaches – one male and one female coach –are recognized for their remarkable contributions, both on and off the field. Each Coach of the Year is presented with $1,000 as a way of thanking them for their commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
