My Warriors Place: Charity Spotlight
November 6, 2013 Posted By Vanguard Attorneys
My Warriors Place is a non-profit organization and retreat destination started by Kelly Kowall, whose son Corey, like many others, gave his life for his brothers-in-arms and his country. My Warriors Place offers a mentor-ship program and retreat area designed to assist returning veterans and their families who may have lost a loved one or comrade in battle. My Warriors Place employs different resources to help aid in the healing process.
Spc. Corey Kowall was killed in action on September 20, 2009, while on route to lend support at a location by their FOB in Afghanistan where IED’s had been detected. Spc. Kowall was only 20 years old at the time of his death and was serving as an Infantry Paratrooper with the fourth brigade combat team of the 82nd airborne division in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.
- Retreat in Ruskin, FL: My Warriors Place retreat strives to provide a relaxed setting and a safe harbor while being a resource for any Military Service Member, Veteran, Blue Star, or Gold Star Family Member. The organization offers a relaxed tropical property nestled on the Little Manatee River in Ruskin, Florida. The property consists of 2 houses, 5 trailers, 4 RV pads and a Laundromat, but the owners are working to expand the site further. Amenities include, but are not limited to, canoes, kayaks, fishing equipment, a fire pit, screened in patios, basketball courts, bicycles, an exercise room, hammocks, a boat launch area and a dock.
- Grief and Peer Mentoring (Project Corregidor): My Warriors Place grief and peer mentoring program involves a network of Veterans who have experienced the death of a fellow comrade while serving in the armed forces. Each mentor has been specially trained as a Peer Mentor and possesses experience helping other military service members coping with a similar tragedy. The program supports these military survivors and helps them to cope with losses in their own unique ways. Soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen are taught to draw upon their own strengths and to develop healthy coping mechanisms. Peer Mentors are always just a phone call away.
- FAVE Boating Expeditions: My Warriors Place hosts a variety of local boating and fishing expeditions for veterans and family members in connection with the retreat services. Boating trips are planned around the needs of the particular group involved and each experience is new and unique. Expeditions can include evening cruises, deep sea fishing charters, or quiet canoe / kayak adventures.
In November, My Warriors Place will host Project Corregidor’s first annual Ride for the Fallen. The event is a group motorcycle ride honoring fallen soldiers from recent deployments. Special honors will be given to Specialist Corey J. Kowall and a number of other fallen comrades to be named at the outing.
