On Saturday, February 1st, a 21-year-old resident of Winter Garden lost his life after a freak accident in which he was electrocuted after crashing his Hummer SUV into a utility power pole, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Jamal Ashim was travelling westbound on Cook Road in Lake County close to 1 pm on Saturday afternoon. Ashim unexpectedly lost control of his 2003 Hummer and swerved off the roadway. The SUV skidded onto the road’s shoulder and struck the utility pole, damaging several power lines, state troopers said.
According to the accident report, Ashim avoided any serious injuries in the crash. However, when he stepped out of the Hummer truck to assess the damage, he walked into a live power line that he didn’t see dangling in front of him and was shocked to death. Another passer-by saw a man lying on the ground and called authorities. Ashim was pronounced dead at the accident scene by emergency rescue responders.
No further details were provided by state troopers. It was not made clear what caused the driver to lose control in the first place. Statistically, the majority of electrocution injuries and deaths take place in connection with industrial and workplace accidents.
