Elderly Couple Killed after Car Accident in Oviedo

On Friday, December 13th, a late evening car crash claimed the lives of an elderly couple and left another driver with serious injuries.

The crash took place near the intersection of East Mitchell Hammock Road and Clara Lee Evans Way in Oviedo, about 15 miles northeast of Orlando.

According to police, 75-year-old Jesse Smith was travelling westbound on Mitchell Hammock Road with his wife, 76-year-old Icena Smith. Jesse Smith was getting ready to make a left turn onto Clara Lee Evans Way just as another automobile driven by a woman was approaching in the oncoming lanes. Police have not released the name of the other driver.

Jesse Smith failed to yield the right of way to the woman driving the other car, and the other vehicle collided with Smith’s. Jesse Smith died at the scene of the accident and his wife was rushed to Central Florida Regional Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Although the woman driving the other vehicle was seriously injured as well, she is expected to survive.

Traffic-homicide investigators have opened an investigation. No word was provided on whether any traffic citations or charges are pending. Based on initial information, police believe the crash to be a tragic accident, but an official determination is still pending the outcome of the investigation.
