Lennard Student Athlete Honored during Special Assembly
Vanguard Award Selection Committee is proud to announce that Josh Shears, a senior from Earl J. Lennard High School, has been selected as the February Student Athlete of the Month. Vanguard Attorneys, a Florida personal injury law firm, created the award program to honor the hard-work, drive and discipline necessary for student athletes to have a positive impact in athletics, academics and the community. Members of the committee will present Josh with the award as well as a $1,000 check to be donated to the school’s athletic department on his behalf during a special assembly at on Tuesday, March 19th at 9 am Lennard High School located at 2342 Shell Point Rd E Ruskin, FL 33570.
Kennedy Duran, Lennard’s head baseball coach, explains that Josh is an outstanding student athlete with a bright future ahead of him. Having endured the loss of a parent, Josh has handled life’s adversities with poise and has chosen to focus on the positive. A four-time varsity letterman, Josh has led the baseball team as captain for three years. He was also the recipient of the Outstanding Pitcher Award, a true testament to his athletic ability. When he isn’t excelling on the baseball field, Josh stays busy giving back to the community. He is a member of his church’s Youth Group and also helps feed the homeless during Thanksgiving. Josh is ranked in the top 10 percent in his class and plans to attend the University of South Florida or Chesapeake College after high school.
Each month of the school year, The Vanguard Award Selection Committee recognizes the “Student Athlete of the Month.” The winning student receives an award recognizing his/her achievements as well as a $1,000 check that is donated to their school’s athletic department in honor of their outstanding performance. Student Athletes of the Month are also eligible to be named the overall “Student Athlete MVP” at the end of the year and receive a check that is applied towards their college tuition.
The Vanguard Award also recognizes outstanding coaches. At the end of each school year, two coaches – one male and one female coach –are recognized for their remarkable contributions, both on and off the field. Each Coach of the Year is presented with $1,000 as a way of thanking them for their commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
REQUIREMENTS FOR NOMINATED STUDENTS
- The student athlete’s name and year (juniors and seniors only);
- Current overall GPA (GPA of 3.0 or above);
- Sport and athletic achievements (open to student athletes who compete in their nominated sport during the nomination month or the previous month – for example, the April Vanguard Award will consider student athletes who compete in March or April);
- Community involvement;
- Any hardships overcome by the student athlete; and
- Plans for continuing education.
