A motorcyclist lost his life on Friday, February 28th 2013 when his motorcycle slammed into the back end of a pickup truck on East State Road 40 at Southeast 185th Court, according to an accident report filed by the Florida Highway Patrol.

State troopers responding to the fatal traffic accident said the motorcyclist was taken by ambulance to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he later died from severe injuries. Traffic investigators identified the deceased motorcyclist as 46-year-old Bryant Giannino of Orlando. According to authorities, the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Motorcycle helmets are not required under Florida law.

Around 12:00 p.m., a westbound 2012 Ford F-250 pickup truck had stopped as the driver prepared to turn left into Lena’s Seafood, troopers noted. Suddenly, the motorcycle struck the back of the pickup. Giannino was ejected from the motorcycle and landed in the roadway.

The two occupants in the pickup — Robin Lemastus, age 50, of Kentucky, and her 15-year-old daughter — did not suffer any injuries in the accident. Tom Aprigliano, age 53, and his fiancée, Louise Cappatt, 52, both of Deltona, were riding together on a separate motorcycle following behind their friend, Giannino.

Aprigliano claims the pickup stopped “dead in the middle of the street and (Giannino) never hit the brakes.” He also claimed he did not see any indicators or turn signals to indicate that the vehicle was about to turn left.

The motorcycle accident was the second to occur in Marion County in just four days in which a motorcyclist was either killed or seriously injured and not wearing a helmet. The fatality is the eighth traffic death in Marion County so far this year. It was not made clear whether any traffic citations were pending in connection with the accident.
